30.04.2015 - Irina, 28, teaches young school children how to deal with mines in the village of Karin Tak, central Nagorno-Karabakh. She is a refugee from Baku and she works for HALO trust, the oldest and largest humanitarian mine clearance organization in the world. The NGO has been the sole institution dealing with the disposal of mines and unexploded ordnance in NKR since 2000. There have been 281 accidents involving 366 people since 1995. The death rate is estimated at 22% of all cases. According to the NGO, the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh has one of the world’s highest per capita rates of accidents caused by mines, cluster munitions and other explosive remnants of war.
