Street prostition is rife and hundreds of illegal brothels open and close frequently as authorities and ineffective legislation struggle to cope. According to data released this year by the Center for Control and Prevention of Diseases, 17 prostitutes working in illegal brothels in central Athens were found to be HIV-positive.
