31.01.2015 – Members of the far-right Golden Dawn party commemorate the Imia military crisis in central Athens. Imia, a pair of two small uninhabited islets in the Aegean Sea, was the object of a military crisis and subsequent dispute over sovereignty between Greece and Turkey in 1996.

Openly racist, violent and Eurosceptic, the party existed only in the far periphery of Greek politics prior to the 2009 start of the country’s economic crisis. Golden Dawn’s popularity rose during local elections in 2010 when it won 5.3% of the vote in Athens' municipality after campaigning hard in neighborhoods with large immigrant communities. Following the January 2015 elections, the party holds 17 parliamentary seats and it is the third largest in the Greek Parliament.
