06.12.2014 - Protesters clashed with riot police in central Athens' Exarchia neighborhood, following a demonstration for the 6th year anniversary of the fatal shooting of 15 year old Alexandros Grigoropoulos by police officer Epaminondas Korkoneas in 2008. The police killing sparked some of the most violent protests that Greece had seen in decades and Amnesty International reported a coinciding rise in human rights violations by Greek police officers during demonstrations that followed Grigoropoulos' shooting. Police violations continued and intensified during later years (2010-2012) with the introduction of harsh austerity measures demanded by Greece's creditors.
